Kayak Austral specializes in guided seakayaktours through the fjords und channels of Patagonia, Chile. We are located in the south of Chile in Puerto Montt. Seakayaking is our passion. We have certain kayak tours in our program but of course organize individual kayaking adventures for our customers.

Many of my friends wonder how it is possible that a 32 year old Austrian fellow ended up in such a distant country as Chile-Puerto Montt and has dedicated his life to developing seakayak tourism... and, if I have to be honest, sometimes I can't explain it either; perhaps it all began without me realizing what was going on. Since I was little I felt an enormous fascination for the sea, even though my country doesn't have a coast, and maybe for this very reason, having grown up surrounded by mountains, I always felt the lack of an endless horizon, which is what the sea represents to me. At the age of 15 I bought my first kayak, a double Klepper, and I took all my friends on different voyages on kayaks through Europe and Canada, and that is how I ended up in Chile at the age of 19, without knowing a single word of Spanish. After arriving in Puert Montt I was fascinated by the combination of mountains and ocean, all at the same time, and that is why I often returned to Puerto Montt and its surroundings to travel in kayak. On my third trip I met my wife and found a reason to finally learn Spanish, and at last I had an excuse to professionally dedicate myself to my favourite personal hobby and to stay in the country of my choice for good. For that reason I did the 4 star assessment and the 5 star course at the Anglesey Sea and Surf Center (ASSC) in Wales. More than eight years have passed since my wife and I began our project, years where I completed many voyages with my clients and friends. Most of these trips last for a short time, but I have also accomplished expeditions of many days, like the one I did from Tortel to Puerto Eden with my friend Reg Lake, an American fellow who, just like me, suffers from a great attraction to the Chilean Patagonia.
